DESCRIPTION

This HSE approved course will supply all learners with the skills and knowledge needed to provide treatment to their casualties in a prompt, safe and effective manner. A range of subjects are covered including:

HEALTH AND SAFETY COURSES

DESCRIPTION

This is a three day course for duty managers, centre and club managers of leisure facilities who have operational control of their facilities. On successful completion of the training, delegates will be able to:

  • Explain the key components of a health and safety management system.
  • Understand the legal framework within the UK, the sources and importance of health and safety information, law enforcement and the difference between criminal and civil law.
  • Compile risk assessments and accompanying written procedures in key operational areas and advise upon facility maintenance and the safe use of contractors.
  • Describe the key requirements of current legislation that is relevant to the sport and physical activity sector.
  • Supervise and manage health and safety in their workplace more effectively.

ASSESSMENT

It is assessed by a 50 question multiple choice examination at the end of the course.

LIFEGUARD COURSES

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

Candidates must be 16 years or older at the time of taking the final assessment and be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:

  • Jump/dive into deep water
  • Swim 50 metres in no more than 60 seconds
  • Swim 100 metres continuously on front and then on the back in deep water
  • Tread water for 30 seconds in deep water
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool (2.8 metres)
  • Climb out unaided without ladder/steps where the pool design permits

Please note: You may be required to undertake a water test to ensure you can meet the course pre-requisites prior to being allowed to book onto this course.

 

DESCRIPTION

The NPLQ course is a minimum of 36 hours long. It is physically demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Training and assessment for the NPLQ is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the qualification.

  • Section 1 – The Lifeguard, Swimming Pool and Supervision
  • Section 2 – Intervention, Rescue and Emergency Action Plans
  • Section 3 – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, AED and First Aid

ASSESSMENT

At the end of the course, candidates are required to undertake a practical assessment on pool lifeguard theory, pool rescue, first aid and CPR.

Subject to successfully passing the final assessment, the candidates will hold a full 8th Edition National Pool Lifeguard Qualification inclusive of all 3 units, which are valid for 2 years.

OPERATIONS COURSES

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

You must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.

There is a pre course preparation sheet which is required to be completed prior to the course. This is to be taken on the first day of the course for initial discussions with the course tutor. This pre course preparation sheet is sent alongside other pre course administration from the IoS.

DESCRIPTION

This three-day course is the essential technical qualification for staff involved in day-to-day pool plant operation, or those responsible for plant management.

By the end of the course successful candidates will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the design and operation of their own pool plant including the circulation, filtration, disinfection, pH correction and heating of pool water. They will know how to maintain water that is in ‘balance' and which is safe and pleasant to swim in. Candidates will be able to use correct techniques to test pool water and understand the remedial action required to restore ideal conditions, the technical requirements for ensuring safe and efficient operation of pool plant.

ASSESSMENT

This course is assessed using a multiple choice test on the third day of the course, followed by a post course work based assignment. This assignment has to be completed within 3 weeks from the last day of the course and received by the IoS within the 3 week time frame.

To complete the assignment, learners need access to an operational plant room.

Awarding times will be between 5-7 weeks following the course.

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

You must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course. Learners must have passed an NPPO, or attended a PPO Revalidation course, no more than 3 years ago.

DESCRIPTION

Provided you passed your NPPO, or attended a PPO Revalidation course, no more than 5 years ago, you will automatically have been placed on the CIMSPA's Register. By doing so you will be recognised by employers and the industry for keeping your technical knowledge of pool plant and water treatment up to date.

Please note: Candidates who passed a National Pool Plant Operators Course, or completed a Pool Plant Revalidation Course or a RoPPPs Update Seminar prior to 1st August 2010 will remain on RoPPPs for 5 years, for courses taken from 1 August 2010 registration will be for 3 years.

The aim of this ONE day course is to provide qualified NPPO candidates with the necessary technical updates on pool plant, water treatment and health and safety practices, to bring their knowledge back up to date.

Course content:

  • Management of pH and chlorine levels.
  • Use of UV
  • Health and safety update
  • Latest advances in technology and equipment
  • Bacteriological testing - what do the results mean?
  • Linking pool water treatment with source water
  • Energy management update
  • Differences in operation of spa, swimming, hydrotherapy pools

ASSESSMENT

There is no assessment with the Update Seminar. Full participation and engagement is required throughout the day.

SWIMMING TEACHER COURSES

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

You must be at least 17 years of age at the start of the course.

Learners are required to be 17 years of age to register for this qualification and must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • ASA Teacher Certificate (1994-2000)
  • ASA Level 2 (Teacher) Swimming, units 1-3 (2000-2006/7)
  • ASA UKCC Level 2 Certificate for Teaching Aquatics, units 1-6
  • ASA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics (QCF), units 201-208

Your original pre-requisite certificate must be brought along with you to the course on the first face to face day and be presented to the tutor.

Although not compulsory, it is advised that you should have completed several hours, over a prolonged period, of assisting or shadowing experienced level 2 Adult and Child Teachers.

This will help your communication skills when supporting adults to facilitate their children’s learning. 

DESCRIPTION

This qualification takes a blended learning approach combining pre course e-learning followed by 1.5 days face to face delivery and post course online portfolio. The total guided learning hours are 45. The guided learning hours for the online learning and completion of assessments are approximately 15 - 20 hours. The L2CAP is intended for those teachers who will be delivering sessions to adult and child groups (between 0 and 4 years).

The units of this qualification will enable learners to:

  • Develop confidence, communication and inter personal skills
  • Identify the principles of pre-fundamentals sessions
  • Develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities
  • Adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of adult and child sessions
  • Reflect on their own previous or current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development. 

ASSESSMENT

Learners can be assessed using a combination of methods such as observation, examination of products, oral and written questioning, professional discussion and assignments/case study.

Achievement of this qualification will provide sufficient evidence that an individual has acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to deliver Learn to Swim sessions in the context of adult and child sessions.

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

You must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the course. In order to attend this course, you must hold:

  • An ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching)

OR

  • An ASA Level 1 Award in Teaching Aquatics or an equivalent ASA qualification certificated after 1994.

DESCRIPTION

The ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher qualification is a practical qualification, which develops the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be a Swimming Teacher.

This qualification builds on the knowledge, skills and abilities developed in the ASA Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification. When achieved it ensures swimming teachers can effectively and independently plan, prepare, deliver, monitor and evaluate a series of swimming teaching lessons.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts:

Assessment is the responsibility of the Tutor/Assessor and will cover the following:

  • A selection of group work, presentations, group tasks, worksheets, games and pool work and other activities deemed appropriate by the assessor
